The word “hero” is too often bandied about at will, diminishing its true meaning. Yet in this case the term is right on the money. Read below as our friend, Vietnam veteran William Monsoon Mimiaga, remembers one such hero:

Remembering this sad day as myself and VVA Chapter 785 lost a Member and a good friend and the Nation lost a “Hero,” as Sgt Walter Ehlers US Army, the recipient of the Medal of Honor, for his actions during World War II, passed away this day in 2014. A proud member of the “greatest generation.” Walter joined his younger brother Roland in Valhalla and now they both are reunited on the cherished “high ground!” Both brothers fought through North Africa, Algiers and Sicily together but were separated from each other for the D-Day Landings. Sadly, Roland was killed on the initial landing. Wlater did not find out for three days. It broke his heart, as he felt that he had looked out for his little brother through three campaigns and that they should not have been separated.

A close neighbor of mine in Orange County, Walt was a very active participant with many of our VVA Chapter functions and gave back to the community of Veterans everyday. He never dropped his pack with caring for our own. He is so missed. Prayers always for his beautiful bride Dorothy, his three children, eleven grand children and two-great-grandchildren. Walter was truly a Southern gentleman and a devout Christian, and always had a smile on his face. God Bless you Walter and Roland in Valhalla and someday we will join you on the high ground. Will always remember and love you my brother and Oooorah and Semper Fi. Monsoon
